The-megawattBatokaGorgeplanthasbeenplannedforyearsbythetwosouthernAfricannations,bothofwhicharestrugglingwithelectricityshortagesafteradroughtcurbedhydropoweroutput.GeneralElectricandPowerChinaareinaconsortiumthatwasshortlistedinFebruarytobuildthefacility.

“ZambiaandZimbabwehaveagreedonthisproject.WehaveallagreedthatwegiveittoGE-ChinaPowerandGEtogether,”MnangagwasaidinaninterviewWednesdayinMaputo,Mozambique’scapital,wherehewasattendingaconference.“It’scriticalthatwemovefastonthatfrontbecauseit’snecessarythatasweindustrialisethatweneedelectricity.”

Whiletheprojectwilladdresselectricityshortages,it’sonthesameriver-theZambezi-thathaslefttheKaribahydropowerdamdownstreamtooemptytofunctionatfullcapacity.

GEsaidinanemailedresponsetoquestionsthattheZambeziRiverAuthority,whichmanagespowerplantsontheriver,hadsaiditwouldappointafinaldeveloperfortheprojectbySeptember.Aspartoftheconsortium,GEwouldhavea“materialroleinthedevelopmentandexecutionoftheproject,”includingthedesignandsupplyofhydropowertechnologies,itsaid.
